Artist Statement: One of my favorite scriptures is 1 Corinthians 2:9 “…Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.” We may think we have a sense of what God has in store for us, but we don’t- we can’t even conceive of it! When we consider the measure of our creation-what our purpose is, what our potential is- I think we have a small, limited glimpse of something that’s beyond our ability to quantify and fully understand right now.
My painting references this messy, indefinite process of becoming. I depict multiple locations simultaneously to convey the accumulation of identity-shaping experiences in those places. Traces of previous layers, as well as shifts in perspective and scale, give the work a sense of ambiguity and complexity. The process mirrors the idea of the work- negotiating layers and deciding what to hold close, change, or push away.
